Join Cinema Politica Concordia for the Montreal premiere of TASTE OF CEMENT – An examination of the degrading conditions experienced by Syrian construction workers building skyscrapers in Beirut on the ruins caused by the Lebanese civil war. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Ziad Kalthoum!
This event is presented in collaboration with RIDM. This screening is co-presented with McGill Syrian Students’ Association and Concordia Syrian Students’ Association. Admission is by donation ($5-10 suggested). The venue is wheelchair accessible.

TASTE OF CEMENT is an essay documentary of Syrian construction workers building new skyscrapers in Beirut on the ruins caused by the Lebanese civil war. At the same time their own houses are being bombed in Syria. A Curfew prohibits them from leaving the construction site after work. Every night in their pit below the skyscraper the news from their homeland and the memories of the war chase them. Mute and imprisoned in the cement underground, they must endure until the new day arrives where the hammering and welding drowns out their nightmares.

Cet événement est présenté en collaboration avec RIDM. Cet événement est co-présenté avec McGill Syrian Students’ Association et Concordia Syrian Students’ Association. L’entrée se fait sur une base de contributions volontaires (5-10$ suggéré). La salle est accessible en fauteuil roulant.

Gagnant du Grand prix à Visions du réel cette année, le tour de force cinématographique de Ziad Kalthoum examine les conditions déshumanisantes des travailleurs de la construction syriens réfugiés au Liban. Confinés jour et nuit sur le chantier par un couvre-feu qui leur interdit l’accès au monde extérieur, les ouvriers reconstruisent leur pays d’adoption, tout en vivant l’angoisse de savoir leur propre patrie en totale destruction. Aux difficiles journées de labeur succèdent de longues nuits solitaires, hantées par les cauchemars collectifs de ce peuple traumatisé par la perte. Avec d’impressionnantes envolées oniriques, une caméra envoûtante, un montage inattendu et une bande sonore époustouflante, le cinéaste syrien livre une œuvre vertigineuse et profondément humaniste.
